Germany Family and Friends Visit Visa
Applicants who have invitations from friends or family to visit them in Germany can apply in this category.All applicants must provide an individual application form and individual documents for each person travelling which includes children of any age even in the case of children sharing parent’s passports.
Please refer to the documents required section to ascertain which documents are required. Please be aware that the Swiss embassy reserves the right to request additional documents not on the list in to process the application. We will inform you should this be the case once the application is submitted.
Documents Required
- Passport (original and copy) must be valid for at least 90 days beyond the return date of the trip to the Schengen Area and has to be issued within the last 10 years on the day of leaving the Schengen Area. Photocopies of all previous Schengen visas.
- UK residence permit (original and copy) must be valid for at least 90 days beyond the return date of the trip to the Schengen Area.
- Two recent passport size photographs (not older than 1 month) taken against a white background.
- Visa application form, dully completed in all sections, dated and signed. Application form is in the download pack.
- Employment letter/ student letter must be originally signed on the company headed letter, not older than 1 month, addressed to the Mission, name and position of the signee, confirming applicants employment/ enrolment.
- If Self Employed - Accountant letter must be originally signed on the headed letter, not older than 1 month, addressed to the Mission, name and position of the signee, confirming applicant self-employment.
For company directors conducting own accounts, certificate or incorporation. Business bank account statement for the last three months must also be submitted or recent accountant letter stating yearly income. - Unemployed/ retired – recent original letter obtained from local Jobcentre or Pension Services.
- Housewife – marriage certificate (original and copy) must be translated by a certified translator in the UK if this document was issued outside the EU and is not in English or German, spouse passport copy, employment letter, bank statement, sponsorship letter.
- Invitation letter from the host in Germany must be dated and signed, not older than 1 month, confirming travel period and address of stay with a photocopy of the host’s passport. If the host in Germany is non-EU citizen then a copy of the host’s residence permit in Germany must be provided. OR
Formal Declaration of Obligation (Verpflichtungserklarung), which can be obtained from the sponsor’s local Town Hall authority (Foreigners Office – Auslanderbehorde) in Germany(if host lives in Germany). - Latest 3 months UK current account bank statement showing applicant’s name, address and an end balance dated within the last five days on the visa application submission date, balance needs to show a minimum amount of £40.00 a day of stay in the Schengen Area (plus outstanding accommodation and travel fees).
- Confirmed return flight tickets.
- Confirmed hotel reservation mentioning applicant name, travel dates and accommodation address.
- Travel insurance must be issued in UK or Germany, stating the name of the applicant, geographical coverage area and the minimum coverage for medical emergency and repatriation of 30.000 Euro. Applicant must provide the table of benefits.
- Dully completed and signed 'Additional Information Sheet', the form can be found in the download visa package.

- For certain nationalities the processing time may take up to 15 working days.
- You should apply for a Germany Schengen tourist visa in UK only;
- If Germany is the only Schengen country you plan on visiting
- Germany is your main destination (the country you will be staying the longest in)
- Germany is the first Schengen country you are visiting (when spending an equal amount of days in Germany and another Schengen country)
- All applicants must provide a separate set of documents even if applying as a family.
- The mission reserves the right to request additional information and/or documents which are not on the documents required list.
- The duration, number of entries and issuance of visa are at the sole discretion of the Germany Consulate in London.
